Individual and Group Creativity

There’s a difference of opinion on the source of creativity, whether it is an individual act or a group effort. The book ‘Managing Creativity and Innovation’ states that groups can often achieve greater creative output than individuals working alone because they bring a greater sum of competences and insights to the effort. (Harvard Business Essentials 2003)

Although, another book ‘’New Ideas about New Ideas’ states that 56% of inductees at the National Inventors Hall of Fame made their discoveries as individuals or at small firms they founded, and that 27% of discoveries were made in large organizations. (White, S. 2002)

These differing indicators suggest that an inclusive approach is the best way to address the creative needs of a team. Although, for many creative thinking requires some degree of physical separation. Ideas need time, and people need space, while creating new ideas. Access to both private and communal space is optimal for the creation of new ideas.
