If It Ain’t Broke Why Fix It?

Under an autocratic or patriarchal system, the team lines up under their supervisor who lines up under his supervisor and so on. This creates a system in which each person works to impress the person above him. It makes it difficult to be creative. If in creating a design I know that I need to get it past my boss to get it out to the client - I first need to make aesthetically pleasing and inoffensive to my boss. If my boss likes red, but hates blue, I need to take that into account when designing. My boss, in turn, needs to worry about his boss and will only let things through that he likes.

The interesting thing is his boss will rarely have any experience in design. The entire process relies on not only an educated designer making a decision but also an overworked executive who may not understand the abilities of the medium, the context of the project in relation to other companies, or the history of other similar projects from different companies.

These are the responsibilities of the people on the front line. The front line people deal with these problems every day and have the context, knowledge and expertise that comes from experience and researching their jobs.
