Being Out on Your Own

In a situation where you don’t have a supervisor, it can be a little uncomfortable. Scary even. You lose that umbrella of having your boss stick up for you when you screwed up. Now instead of one person giving you a lecture, everyone on the team is holding you accountable for your failure. That can be terrifying. The only way to make things better is through the support of your team. Because a team will only help someone out a handful of times, members without the skills to do their job stick out like sore thumbs. Then it is the team’s responsibility to get that member up-to-date through classes or research, or whatever is going to help.

On the other hand, members that do their jobs well and have the skills to advance the team shine like stars. It doesn’t take long for the team to see whom they can rely upon and for what purpose. In a patriarchal system, it could take a year for someone in a position to take action to find out that a subordinate is not versed in their job. A patriarchal system is a great place to hide out if you have few skills.
